Hail Season in Austin: What to Check After a Storm | Nighthawk Roofing & Exteriors blog

After a hailstorm rolls through Austin, most homeowners check for the obvious: missing shingles, dents in gutters, cracked skylights. But the damage that actually causes leaks isn't always visible from the ground.

Start with the roof

The first thing we do on any post-storm inspection is fly a drone over the entire roof plane. Hail hits show up as dark spots on light shingles where granule loss has exposed the asphalt underneath. If you're in Cedar Park, Round Rock, or anywhere along the North Austin hail track, your roof took a hit whether you can see it from the driveway or not.

Check the soft metals

Gutter aprons, flashing, and vent boots are the canary in the coal mine. If your gutters have dents, your shingles took the same impact. Check the edge of your roof where the gutter meets the fascia, and look at your plumbing vent boots for cracking or impact marks.

Look in the attic

Go up during the day and look for pinholes of light coming through the roof deck. Check the insulation for moisture stains, especially around plumbing penetrations and chimneys. If you see water marks, the leak has already started, even if your ceiling hasn't stained yet.

When to call a professional

If your roof is more than 10 years old and you've had a hailstorm with hail 1 inch or larger, get a free inspection. Insurance companies in Texas have deadlines for filing hail claims, and the longer you wait, the harder it is to prove the damage came from the storm and not from neglect.

We document everything with drone photos and meet your adjuster on site. If you're in South Austin or Circle C, we're already in your neighborhood every week.
