When to Replace vs. Repair Your Austin Roof
Nighthawk Crew · Jul 20, 2026

A leak doesn't always mean you need a new roof. But too many homeowners patch the same spot three times and then call us when the ceiling is already stained. Here's how we decide between a targeted repair and a full replacement.
When a repair makes sense
- The roof is less than 12 years old
- The damage is isolated to one area, like a cracked pipe boot or a single lifted shingle
- The rest of the roof plane is in good condition with no significant granule loss
- The leak is coming from a flashing failure, not shingle failure
A targeted repair on a relatively new roof is the right call. We'll replace the damaged component, re-seal the flashing, and document the rest of the roof so you know what to watch for.
When replacement is the better call
- The roof is 15+ years old and you're in the Austin hail corridor
- Multiple leaks are showing up in different areas of the house
- Granule loss is visible in the gutters and on the ground below downspouts
- The shingles are curling, clawing, or losing their seal strip
- You've already paid for two or more repairs in the last two years
At this point, you're spending money on a roof that's going to fail again. A full replacement with Class 4 shingles gives you a fresh system, a manufacturer warranty, and potentially a lower insurance premium.
The cost question
A repair typically runs $300 to $1,200 depending on what's involved. A full replacement on an average Austin home runs $8,000 to $18,000 depending on size, material, and complexity. If you're repairing the same roof every year, the math favors replacement.
Use our cost estimator to get a ballpark for your home, then schedule a free inspection and we'll tell you straight whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense.
If you're in Bee Cave or Lakeway with a metal roof, the calculus is different, metal lasts 40 to 70 years and repairs are almost always worth it over replacement.
