Composite Deck Build in Bee Cave

The Project

This Bee Cave home had a complex roofline with multiple valleys and a backyard that sloped away from the house. The homeowners wanted a multi-level deck that would take advantage of their hill country views and provide an outdoor living space that could handle the sun exposure and wind that comes with a hillside lot.

What We Found

• Sloped backyard required a multi-level design with elevated framing
• Complex roofline meant the deck needed to work around multiple valleys and drainage paths
• Sun exposure on the south-facing side required a material that wouldn't fade or get too hot
• HOA requirements for railing height and material

What We Did

We designed a two-level deck that stepped down with the yard, connected by a wide staircase. The upper level sits off the main living area for entertaining, and the lower level provides a more private seating area with views of the hill country.

The framing is ground-contact treated lumber, set on poured concrete footings below frost. The ledger was flashed to the house with a proper lag-bolt and flashing detail to prevent water intrusion at the connection point.

TimberTech composite boards went down with a hidden fastener clip system - no screw heads to catch a bare foot, and no annual staining or sealing. The homeowners chose a lighter color board for the south-facing section to minimize heat absorption. The railing is code-height aluminum with balusters spaced to pass inspection.

The Result

The project took five days. The homeowners have a multi-level outdoor living space that takes advantage of their hill country views, with a surface that won't splinter, fade, or require annual maintenance. The complex framing around the roofline valleys was flashed and sealed to prevent any water intrusion at the transitions, and the deck passed all inspections on the first try.
